Egypt’s designation of Libya’s Sirte and Jufra as red lines
has helped in preserving the political path of the country’s crisis, President
Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi told president of the Arab Parliament on Saturday.
According to a presidency statement, El-Sisi told the Arab
Parliament Chief Adel Al-Assoumi that the designation has helped in achieving
balance in the country, stressing that unified stances would allow Arab states
to place similar approaches in maintaining Arab regional security in all issues
faced.
Egypt has warned over the summer that Cairo “will not stand
idle” in the face of any attack on Libya’s Sirte and Jufra, both described as
“red lines” for Egypt’s national security.
In June, Egypt proposed a peace initiative dubbed the Cairo
declaration, which was based on the conclusion of the Berlin conference. It
proposed a ceasefire as well as the election of a leadership council.
Cairo has been pushing for a political settlement in Libya,
calling for a ceasefire, a complete withdrawal of militias and halt to foreign
intervention within the country, as well as a fair distribution of wealth.
Al-Assoumi said during Saturday’s meeting that such red lines
have contributed directly in compromising risks.
The meeting, which discussed bolstering the role of the Arab
parliament for dialogue and democracy, was attended by Egyptian Parliament
speaker Hanafy Gebali and Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry.
El-Sisi affirmed his full support of the Arab parliament as a
platform that interacts with the concerns of the public opinion towards various
critical issues and as an extension to its role in contributing in
consolidating stability.
