A prison warden in northern Israel alleged on Wednesday that Israeli female soldiers, who were doing their military service as prison guards, were “pimped” out to Palestinian prisoners in 2018.

Freddy Ben-Shitrit, the commander at Gilboa Prison, made the claim during his testimony over the escape of six Palestinian security prisoners from the prison on September 6, The Jerusalem Post (The Post) reported.

Although the incident was first reported three years ago, senior prison staff did not testify about it until Wednesday.

Several former female soldiers asserted that they were deliberately placed in harm’s way by their superiors in efforts to get concessions from the prisoners, The Times of Israel (ToI) reported.

Ben-Shitrit, who was not the warden when the alleged incidents occurred, said the prison “pimped soldiers” and “handed over female soldiers to terrorists for sexual purposes.”

“I was a security guard [at Gilboa Prison] and I would hate working there,” an anonymous testimony shared when the accusations were first reported.

“I would say that the men harassed me. The first time I said ‘Ok, something like this can happen by mistake.’ But a second time and a third time and a fourth time… I would go and report them, they would say ‘Don’t pay him any attention… he’s all over the place,” The Post reported

The initial investigation into the claims was closed due to a lack of evidence, according to ToI.

However, Shitrit revived the allegations, and one of the soldiers who said she was sexually assaulted in the incident called to reopen the investigation.
